Construction of this gigantic cathedral, crowned with one of the largest domes in Italy, began in 1488. Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci are said to have worked on the design. Because of the complexity of the dome, it was not completed until 1887. The facade is 19th century.

This imposing brick castle was built between 1360 and 1365 by order of Galeazzo Visconti and served as a fortification and residence. The north wing of the castle was destroyed at the battle of Pavia (1525) between the French and the Spanish. Petrarch loved the building and assembled a rich library there, which later moved to France. The large courtyard has arcades and an ornate loggia with twin windows.

According to legend, some pilgrims wanted to attend midnight mass in the city on Christmas Eve in 999, but due to the thick fog their boats could not cross the river. Suddenly, a man dressed in red arrived and promised that he would immediately build a bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross the bridge. The man in red was the devil, and only the Archangel Michael, who had come from the nearby church, recognized him. Michael pretended to agree to the deal, but once the bridge was built, a goat crossed it first. The bridge is therefore also known as the Ponte del Diavolo ("Devil's Bridge").

The covered bridge has its origins in Roman times. The current one was constructed in the 14th century and covered in 1583. Upstream of the bridge you can still see pillars of the original bridge, reconstructed after the Second World War. A memorial stone on the bridge tells that Albert Einstein stayed in Pavia for several months and loved the place.

The Statua della Lavandaia in Pavia is one of the symbols of the city. This beautiful sculpture, created by local artist Giovanni Scapolla in 1981, recalls the time when the banks of the Ticino River were populated by women who washed clothes in the river. Giovanni Scapolla was inspired by his mother, a famous washerwoman named 'Sciura Teresina', who always wore a traditional 'caplina' on her head. Names of the washerwomen: The washerwomen often had nicknames related to physical characteristics. The most famous was 'Angiuleta', but there were others such as 'Marieta dai pe tort' (with crooked feet) and 'Gianina la culona' (the plump one). Method: The women worked all day on the riverbank. The clothes were soaked overnight in large concrete containers and then washed by the river using a wooden board (‘a scägn’). Men and children collected the washed clothes and delivered them throughout the city. It was hard and unprofitable work, with only one or two lira each. Singing and entertainment: To pass the time, the washerwomen often sang. One of their favorite songs was “La donna è mobile” from Verdi's opera Rigoletto. They even adapted the text: 'La dona l'è UN MOBIL da met in sala, l'om l'è un asin da met in stala', referring to the fact that men walked around all day while the women stood still to to wash.

The Covered Bridge connects the historic center of Pavia to Borgo Ticino. The first bridge at this point was built by order of Emperor Augustus and was replaced in the 14th century by a covered bridge. Due to the damage suffered by the Allied bombings during the Second World War, one of the arches of the fourteenth-century bridge collapsed and it was decided to demolish the entire structure. The new bridge was inaugurated in 1951; on the entrance portal on the city side, in memory of past events, a plaque was placed reading: "On the ancient passage of the cerulean Ticino, in the image of the ancient Covered Bridge, demolished by the fury of war, the Italian Republic rebuilt it".

The statue of the washerwoman is one of the symbols of Pavia and it is a bronze work by the sculptor Giovanni Scapolla created in 1981, which is located along the characteristic Via Milazzo. It was placed in this place in memory of the many women who went along the banks of the river to wash clothes. On one of the marble slabs of the statue's base is engraved a poem in the Pavia dialect by the poet Dario Morani.

The Visconti castle was finished in just five years in 1365 under the impetus of Galeazzo II Visconti. The elegant architectural solutions, such as the double and triple lancet windows on the façade, reveal the vocation of this building conceived from the beginning as a residence rather than a fortress. Purchased by the municipality in the first half of the twentieth century, the castle now hosts some sections of the Civic Museums and other cultural events.

The history of the cathedral begins in August 1487 when the citizens asked for the construction of a new cathedral to replace the medieval buildings. Cardinal Ascanio Sforza received permission from Pope Innocent VIII in 1488 to demolish the ancient cathedral and supervise the project. The architecture of the cathedral follows a central plan with arms converging under a large central dome, influenced by structures such as the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence and the studies of Leonardo da Vinci. Donato Bramante initially led the project, while subsequent architects made some changes while maintaining Bramante's original ideas. The construction of the dome was resolved at the end of the nineteenth century by Carlo Maciachini, who chose a masonry dome with a Greek cross plan. The Cathedral of Pavia, completed in 1885, has an imposing façade surmounted by a dome and a loggia inside. The interior has a Greek cross structure with four arms divided into three naves. The dome is supported by eight elaborately shaped pillars, while all the other pillars have the same design. The presbytery is illuminated by high windows with frescoes and an image of the Assumption. The completion of the Cathedral involved several construction phases, including the addition of a reinforced concrete transept in the 20th century by several architects and engineers.

Impossible not to be conquered by the beauty of the Castello Visconteo in Pavia. The stronghold is immersed in a park and represents an imposing medieval fortress in the heart of a city. Despite its grandeur, it is harmonious and luminous. The interior can only be visited in the afternoon, but the courtyard is very beautiful and the museums are interesting.
