A lost place, like the ones you see in books. Whenever I see something like this, I always think it's a shame that the old mills are no longer in use.

A historically important route is the stretch of the Via Francigena in Lomellina which, coming from Robbio, crosses the entire town and allows you to pass by the eighteenth-century sanctuary of the "Madonnina" and the parish church of S. Terenziano (seventeenth century). The route is marked by volunteers to facilitate the passage of pilgrims. In the village there is a hospice near the parish house run by volunteers. As you pass in front of the "Madonnina", it is possible to notice a majestic and centuries-old magnolia behind it. Wikipedia

You arrive from Albonese and you are spoiled for choice, do I go right or left? Take the right and reach Borgolavezzaro. If you go left you have the possibility to decide whether to head towards Robbio or Ceretto Lomellina.

The collegiate basilica of San Lorenzo is dedicated to Lawrence of Rome and has the title of a minor basilica. The Gothic church dates from the 14th century and is the seat of the canon chapter. The church was designed between 1375 and 1380 by Bartolino da Novara in the Lombard Gothic style and was built of brick. A renovation was carried out in 1573 by Martino Bassi, restorations took place in 1840 and again in 1916. In this case, Giuseppe Piatti made the church simpler by removing chapels and replacing the altar. Pope Pius XII raised the church to the rank of a minor basilica in 1939. Source: Wikipedia

A church at this site has been documented since the 12th century, when it was part of a Cluniac monastery of the Benedictine order located on the pilgrimage route to Rome, the Via Francigena. The monastery has suffered a lot over the centuries; An inscription states that the monastery was destroyed in 1216. The brick church has three naves and the three apses end in a typical Romanesque semicircle. The monastery buildings are no longer preserved. There are no remains of a former bell tower that was still there in the 16th century. The church is dedicated to Saint Valerian, a bishop martyred by Genseric in Tunisia in 460. The relics of this pre-Schism Western saint were said to have been taken to Pavia and then to Robbio. The church was desecrated centuries ago and at times used as a warehouse or barracks. There is no interior decoration. Source: Wikipedia

The bumps are tiny hills, generally sandy, which until a few decades ago characterized the landscape of our Lomelline countryside. Most of these very modest reliefs have been leveled to make way for poplar groves and rice fields and the only testimony that remains of them is, in many cases, the ups and downs of the country roads which gives those who walk them the amazement of finding some meters above the level of the cultivated countryside. In the area of the bumps, the alternation of hollows and ridges is visible which testifies to how the surface of our plain has been shaped by the continuous changes in the paths of the rivers, by the incessant work of streams, as well as by the erosion caused by atmospheric agents. Those who pass through Lomellina, after having crossed long stretches of very flat countryside, are pleasantly surprised to discover, in the heart of these centers, small hills flanked by old houses or ancient churches overlooking gently sloping churchyards.

The first Napoleonic decree of 1800 issued for Lomellina establishes that the Agogna department is divided into 17 districts, or municipal districts, Mede is the capital of the third district and Campalestro is part of it (law 11 brumale year IX). With the decree of 25 Fiorile 1800 instead, considering that for the activation of the prefectures, vice-prefectures and related administrative bodies a new division of departments and districts was established, Campalestro is included in the second district of Vigevano, department of Agogna (Law 25 Fiorile year IX). In the territorial subdivision of April 28, 1806, Campalestro falls within the Agogna department, district of Vigevano, fourth canton of Mede, as a third class municipality united with Vellezzo Terno and its Pieve, with a population of 496 inhabitants (subdivision 1806). With the subdivision of 7 October 1814 Campalestro is included in the district of Mede and dependencies, in the province of Mortara (royal edict 1814, ASCVo). With the royal edict of November 10, 1818, the number of municipalities was reduced from 125, as many as there were in the eighteenth century, to 71 and the provinces of Mortara and Vigevano were abolished, re-creating the Province of Lomellina, divided, in turn, into 14 districts ( royal edict 1818, ASC Casei Gerola). Campalestro is today a hamlet of Vellezzo.
