Alpe Cretarzon is one of those mountain pastures abandoned for many years, likely because it was inaccessible by motorized vehicles, and today it is in a state of disrepair. The rustic stone buildings still retain their walls almost intact, while the roofs have collapsed and the window frames are missing. Despite this, the mountain pasture offers a truly extraordinary view: from here you can admire the unmistakable silhouettes of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, the latter of which is naturally further away.

The Sentiero delle Macine della Valmeriana is a truly evocative hiking itinerary that offers a fascinating journey through nature and archaeology. This route leads to the discovery of the ancient millstone quarries, used since Roman times. Along the trail, the remains of abandoned millstones bear witness to an extraction activity that has characterized the area for centuries, representing an important historical legacy for the local community. The path starts from Alpe Valmeriana and is about 10 kilometers long with a difference in altitude of about 700 meters. During the excursion you will encounter points of great interest, such as the evocative Grotta delle Tre Bocche and the so-called “Planetario”, an enormous boulder from which the millstones were extracted.

A challenging trip that requires a bit of training and effort, but it fully pays off: once you reach the summit, you have a 360 degree view of the main peaks: Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, Gran Paradiso and so on and so forth put some. The path is easily identifiable at any time, and about halfway there is a mountain hut where you can refresh yourself.

A beautiful, very panoramic mountain, the final climb that leads to the summit is steep, partly on stony ground. Between the stones at the top, there is the statue of the Madonna, and also a structure that should be a lightning rod. It can usually be reached starting from the Covarey hamlet of Champdepraz
