The Rifugio Gian Federico Benevolo is a historic mountain refuge located at 2,287 meters, in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park. An ideal starting point for hikes and climbs, it offers a welcoming atmosphere and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.

The refuge can be reached by mountain bike, even by those less experienced, with a splendid view.

It's better to take the one-hour detour by car to get directly to Rifugio Savoia. From there, you can easily cycle up. Otherwise, if you're starting from that side, take the tunnel up instead of this trail.

Perfect for family excursions

Our plan was to climb the summit with our bikes on our shoulders. As there was still a lot of snow and some light climbing was required, we parked our bikes along the way. I recommend the Aiguille de la Grande Sassière for hikers but not for bikers, as the descent is partly doable but not worthwhile.

From Les Brevieres, this mountain is a real challenge to your fitness, as you have to overcome over 2200 meters of altitude. You will be rewarded up there with a magnificent view of the great 4000-meter peaks in the Alps. My tip for this tour is to take crampons in your backpack; they were really needed on the last 200 meters as there was a lot of snow, which is possible at this altitude at any time of year.

Beautiful (and only) traverse from North to South in the Gran Paradiso National Park. From the end of Valsavaranche, at the village of Pont Breuil (and beautiful Rifugio Tetras Lyre) starts a steep mountain path (30-40%) from 1900m to 2350m and the Croce dell' Arolley. The fastest way is to climb with your bike on your shoulder. After about 3.5 km of climbing you reach a plateau where you can cycle reasonably well with a gravel bike (and luggage). MTBs with suspension can get on earlier. After about 8.5 km you reach the Colle del Nivolet. Then a spectacular descent over more than 50 km.

If everything is right: hospitality, comfort, good food and a magical landscape, then you are at the Rifugio Bezzi alpine hut.
