📜 History of the Ölper Mill The watermill on the Oker River, which gave the Ölper district its name, was first documented in 1388 as "mole in elbere." At that time, it came into the possession of the city of Braunschweig. For over 450 years, the Ölper Mill was an important economic factor. At times, it comprised two high-capacity grain mills as well as mills for other trades such as: gunpowder mills (from 1534), sawmills, bark mills (for tanners), fulling mills (for clothmakers), and paper mills.
