The memorial commemorates the construction of the dam between 1949 and 1952. It was one of two major dam construction projects in the young GDR. In line with the zeitgeist of the time, it was considered the central youth object of the FDJ, the socialist youth organization of the GDR. This is also where the naming comes from "Barrage of Friendship".

The Cranzahl Reservoir is located at the foot of the Bärenstein mountain. Construction of the Cranzahl Reservoir began in 1949. It is a product of the GDR's early years and one of two reservoir projects undertaken by the still-young state. Just like the second project, the Sosa Reservoir, the party and state leadership relied on the commitment of the Free German Youth (FDJ) and entrusted them with the construction work. As a result, the project was named the "Reservoir of Friendship." Construction was completed in just three years. The reservoir has an earthen dam with a clay lining as its internal seal. It is fed by the Lampertsbach and Moritzbach streams. These two waterways merge to form the Lampertsbach shortly before entering the reservoir. Additionally, the more than seven-kilometer-long "Hanggraben" (slope ditch) provides further water to the reservoir. This ditch receives water from the Sehma River, which originates near the Fichtelberg mountain, and also feeds it into the Lampertsbach. The reservoir, covering approximately 28 hectares, provides raw water for the drinking water supply of the towns of Annaberg-Buchholz and Oberwiesenthal and their surrounding areas. Once around the dam is recommended, especially in the afternoons after pastry gluttony, the short variant with a length of approx. 3.5 km can be done by almost everyone.
