The Cranzahl Dam was built between 1949 and 1952 near Sehmatal-Cranzahl and Bärenstein in the Ore Mountains to supply drinking water to Annaberg-Buchholz and the surrounding area. It was later expanded and renovated. Along with the Sosa Dam, it was one of the two major dam construction projects of the young GDR. Reflecting the spirit of the times, it was named the "Dam of Friendship" as a central youth project of the Free German Youth (FDJ). A memorial stone commemorates this. Many hiking trails lead through this area up to the Bärenstein, offering fantastic views of the Ore Mountains.

Beautiful views of the Ore Mountains mining region with many impressive vistas of the surrounding mountains. There are plenty of benches at the summit, perfect for resting and taking a break.

The steep ascent lives up to its name. Good footwear, outdoor clothing, and sure footing are absolutely essential on this natural and densely overgrown trail.

The town of Cranzahl in the Sehmatal, with a population of 2,000, is primarily known for its dam. It was built between 1949 and 1952 to supply Annaberg-Buchholz and the surrounding area with drinking water.

This trail up the 898-meter-high Bärenstein is steep and strenuous, but rewarding. At the end of the steep climb, you'll find yourself directly at the summit cross.

The local chronicler's bench below the Bärenstein summit cross offers a beautiful, albeit constantly overgrown, view of the Ore Mountains landscape.
