The Herzogtum Lauenburg District Museum features a permanent, free exhibition on the "spirit of life" in the 1950s. For many, this will be a journey into the past. Those who didn't experience this era firsthand will discover the period of the economic miracle and encounter fascinating objects like cigarette burners, petticoats, car vases, and TV guides where a single page contained the entire week's programming. The 1950s are considered the founding years of the Federal Republic of Germany and a time of reconstruction. At the same time, they mark the beginning of today's modern society, as evidenced by the rise of television, the beginnings of the automobile boom, and mass tourism. The Ratzeburg Cathedral (also: Cathedral of St. Mary and St. John the Evangelist) is an outstanding example of Romanesque brick architecture in Northern Germany.

The Ratzeburg Cathedral stands in an elevated position on the western shore of the Domsee and can be seen from all directions, even from a distance. Here, directly opposite the eastern shore of the Domsee, you have some of the best views of the cathedral across the lake.

Barlach always has a special appeal for me. Expressive people, theological background and strong impressions on the viewer. My first non-access to Barlach's art was Alfred Andersch's novel when I was reading it at school, and it was only later that I understood more about Barlach's art.

Wherever you go in the north, the Guelphs were already there.
