The A. Paul Weber Museum was opened in 1973 by Federal President Gustav Heinemann through the Duchy of Lauenburg district during the artist's lifetime, who died in 1980. Weber felt a strong connection to the house and was heavily involved in the renovation and design of the historic building.
He had his own studio set up in the attic, but he rarely used it.

The museum displays around 300 exhibits from Weber's extensive work in 23 rooms. The other offerings range from use of the archive and specialist library to special exhibitions, guided tours, lectures and classroom discussions, for example for school classes, to lithography courses. The high proportion of foreign guests and their great interest shows the artist's national importance.

The house on the cathedral island, together with the neighboring buildings of the manor house built in 1764-66, today the (Duchy of Lauenburg District Museum), the cathedral organist's house and the Ratzeburg Cathedral, forms a historically grown group of buildings that shapes the cityscape.
