When we hear of the patronage of Saint Thomas, most people in Germany probably automatically think back two thousand years to the time of Christ, because one of the twelve apostles Jesus called to follow him bears this name. In the biblical accounts of the New Testament, he is nicknamed "Didymus," which means "twin" in German. In this case, however, the chosen patron of the former monastery and current retreat house—and also the namesake of this place in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm—refers to Saint Thomas Becket (1118 to 1170), also known as Thomas of Canterbury after the place of his bishopric and martyrdom. Incidentally, Canterbury Cathedral (Kent, England) can be visited—at least virtually in the komoot system—at the following link =>> https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/231266

The pilgrimage route of many St. Matthias brotherhoods from the Lower Rhine also passes here on their footpath to St. Matthias in Trier.

No, the tower and the complex have absolutely nothing military about them... At Neuheilenbach in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm, a weather radar has been monitoring what is happening in the Eifel sky and far beyond for 25 years. Since 1998, a 32 meter high steel tower has been enthroned here on a wide plain, 20 minutes by car north of Bitburg, between pastures and fields. Under the dome is a wraparound antenna. It is part of the most modern weather radar network in Europe and is the most important means of measuring precipitation and observing its development. The facility in Neuheilenbach monitors an area that stretches south to Lorraine, east to Frankfurt am Main and north to the Ruhr area. The sum of all radar images is included in the weather forecast service.
