South of the area lies the Houthuizerheide, and to the north and west lie the Tienraijse and Swolgenderheide, all largely consisting of reclaimed forests of Scots pine. East of the area lies the town of Lottum, surrounded by several hamlets and numerous rose farms. The Dutch Forestry Commission (Staatsbosbeheer) has established the N-95 walking route. This 9.3 km walk (there is also a shorter route) begins at the parking lot along Horsterweg. The route, along with information about flora, fauna, and nature management, is indicated on information panels. Several routes of the "Stempel van de Maas" (Stamp of the Meuse) trail (later integrated into the Horst aan de Maas KnoppenLopen network) also pass through this nature reserve. Some marshy sections are crossed by boardwalks. The Pieterpad also passes through the area.

The Schuitwater is a 313-hectare nature reserve in North Limburg. It lies between the towns of Swolgen, Broekhuizenvorst, and Broekhuizen, and west of Lottum. It belongs to the municipality of Horst aan de Maas. The Schuitwater is managed by the Dutch Forestry Commission (Staatsbosbeheer). The name of the area is believed to derive from "beschutten" (sheltering), specifically the sheltering of livestock. However, it can also refer to the flat barges used to transport dredged peat. The Schuitwater nature reserve is a remnant of several old Meuse branches. These gradually silted up. From the 18th century onward, peat was dredged in the Schuitwateren. This was then transported using flat barges. After peat extraction ceased, silting up resumed. It is a wooded and water-rich area surrounded by higher sandy soils, with pine, drifting dunes, heathland, and birch forests. The barge waters within this area are: Lottumer Schuitwater and Schuitwater Broekhuizerbroek.

The Pieterpad (LAW 9) runs from Pieterburen near the Groningen Wadden coast to the Sint-Pietersberg near Maastricht and is over 500 kilometres long, divided into 26 stages. It is the most famous long-distance hiking trail in the Netherlands. The route runs through the most diverse landscapes and is maintained by Nivon. The Pieterpad is marked in the field with the internationally known white-red markings of long-distance hiking trails (LAW) and is described in detail in two hiking guides published by Nivon. There are various mobile hiking apps available, which include all Pieterpad stages (sometimes including a detailed description) and which use GPS to prevent hikers from getting off the route. At the Sint-Pietersberg, the Pieterpad connects to the European hiking trail GR5, which is also part of hiking trail E2. The GR5, which runs via the Ardennes and the French Alps to Nice, is one of the most popular international hiking trails for Dutch hikers. The walk through the heathland over wooden footbridges and the viewpoint on the Schuitwater are fun. An impressive landscape experience.

What a beautiful discovery! 🤩 This place is one of the Plekskes van Geluk in Horst aan de Maas! Experience even more happiness: www.plekskesvangeluk.nl Schuitwater and Swolgenderheide, Broekhuizen GPS: 51.478222, 6.129250 In the middle of nature on the high edge of the heath and at the boardwalk over the Schuitwater. At walking junction 9. Many walking routes take you here. You are here on a sandy path with the drifting dunes of the Swolgender Heide on one side and the old riverbed of the Schuitwater on the other. The landscape around you consists of a nature reserve with a lot of variety of different soil types. The transition from high sandy soil and heath to the old Maas meander with marsh and open water is striking. Slowly but surely, the sand is being redeveloped into the original heathland it once was. What makes you happy here? Climbing through the sand dunes and walking over the wooden bridges. Perceiving the silence and listening to the rustling of the leaves and branches. Paying attention to which animals and mushrooms you can discover. Enjoying the whole picture: being surrounded by greenery and the openness of the heathland. Nature lovers can indulge themselves in this paradise with reptiles, mushrooms and birds: Even the rare nightjar feels at home here. Happiness tip: Two different nature reserves so close to each other, so different and so unique. What makes you special, which three characteristics make you unique? And which of these characteristics would you like to develop further? Do you have an idea how you can do that? You are most yourself when you do what you like. That also makes you the happiest. So what do you like to do most, alone or with others? Make a plan and do one of those things that brings you joy today. And again tomorrow. And the day after tomorrow…
