Around the turn of the 20th century, the Johanngeorgenstadt branch of the Ore Mountains Association constructed a corduroy road through the moor and erected a viewing platform with a protective roof. This platform has since been renovated several times, and its location was moved several meters in the 1970s to better protect the natural environment. The moor is a watershed, ridge-dwarf pine, and dwarf pine raised bog. It is drained to the north by the Steinbach stream, to the west by the Große Bockau stream, to the south by the Buchschachtelgraben ditch towards Rolava, and to the east by the Lehmergrundbach stream. To the west lies the Großer Kranichsee (Great Crane Lake), although the core of the bog is located on the Czech side of the border.

The Kleiner Kranichsee (Czech: Malé jeřábí jezero) is one of the most important raised bogs in the Ore Mountains. In Saxony, the bog has been a nature reserve since 1939. Today, it forms the main part of the larger nature reserve Kleiner Kranichsee, Butterwegmoor and Henneberger Hang. The Czech part of the bog was placed under state protection as a nature reserve in 1962, covering 6.02 hectares. The raised bog is located at an elevation of 930 meters above sea level in a clearing in the high forest southwest of Johanngeorgenstadt. The 27th Original Johanngeorgenstadt Schwibbogen Festival featured a very special highlight. Entrepreneur Siegfried Ott presented the town of Johanngeorgenstadt with 14 carved oak figures, which together depict the exile procession. In November 1653, 100 families fled from the Bohemian Plateau (now Horní Blatná) to Saxony because of their Protestant faith. They were taken in by the village of Jugel, which is now part of Johanngeorgenstadt. After a written petition to Elector Johann Georg I, they were granted permission on February 23, 1654, to establish a town on the Fastenberg hill.
