The Kanalstien near Ribe is a small, quiet road directly along an old waterway west of the city. It ends at the historic Kammersluse – a lock structure that connects the Ribe Å (Ribe River) to the Wadden Sea. This area is characterized by flat marshland, dikes, canals, and typical North Sea vegetation. A real insider tip for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and anyone who wants to experience a piece of authentic Denmark away from the crowds. The path leads past small holiday homes and simple summer cabins. The proximity to the water and the wide panorama over the fields and meadows give you the feeling of being close to nature. The sunset over the marshland is particularly impressive – with a bit of luck, you might see wading birds or even sea eagles. Tip: Visit the Kammersluse at low or high tide – depending on the water level, a fascinating interplay of nature and technology is revealed here. Ideal as a short detour or part of a Wadden Sea bike tour around Ribe.

Just behind the North Sea dike, Vester Vedsted’s shelters offer a scenic and peaceful stop. A nearby memorial and plaques mark the old Danish-German border (1864–1920) and a restored dyke hut from the 1920s. The site is clean, includes toilet facilities, and offers stunning sunset views. Located on Eurovelo 12 and Vestkustruten, it’s popular with cyclists, so reserving ahead is wise (except for one non-reservable shelter).

Every look behind the dike is worthwhile. The access roads to the dike are often gravel. Be careful!

Beautifully located shelters, directly behind the dike. Weather permitting, you can witness beautiful sunsets. The shelters are generally clean, and if you need a hand broom and dustpan, they provide a good cleaning service. The only drawback to these shelters is that you can't sit upright. It may be advisable to reserve a shelter in advance, as this site is located directly on the Eurovelo 12 and Vestkustruten trails and is also popular with drivers. But with a bit of luck, there might be a spot available in the fourth shelter, which cannot be reserved.
