The church is arguably the largest Romanesque village church in the country, built around the year 1200.

The lime paintings on the northern wall are partly from the late Gothic period and partly from the Reformation period, shortly before 1530.

The two large paintings are Lutheran and directed against the Catholic Church.

Brøns Church in the village of Brøns, north of Skærbæk, is Denmark's largest Romanesque village church. Except for the periods 1528-1543 and 1864-1920, the church and parish have always belonged to the Diocese of Ribe and had the Bishop of Ribe as its clergyman. The church's location played a significant role in the early days of the Reformation. From the summer of 1525, Frederik I's son, Haderslev and Tørning Len, took over.

On the north wall of the church, there are two large frescoes from the early 1520s that can almost be considered artistic contributions to the aforementioned Reformation struggle.

Denmark's largest Romanesque village church, built around 1200. Of particular interest are late Gothic and Reformation frescoes from just before 1530 on the north wall. The later frescoes are Lutheran and anti-Catholic.

On the left is a row of pompous prelates with an empty scroll being studied by a wise fool (wearing glasses!). The message is clear: nothing is written, the Pope's word is stupid. Below, in the same image, is a group of poor people hiding behind a Munk arguing with a Lutheran, who appears to be taking the lead. On the right, Catholic bishops and nuns, led by a pope with a bodyguard, attempt to force entry into heaven while Christ guards the entrance.

The pulpit and altarpiece are excellent examples of 16th-century woodcarving.
