Beautiful manor house, surrounded by well-maintained parkland.

The castle's special jewel can be admired in its ballroom. This is where people danced, dined and discussed politics. A lively red deer frieze from the time it was built has been preserved on the walls and the magnificent stucco ceiling is richly decorated with hunting scenes. The castle museum houses an extensive collection of important paintings, impressive sculptures and precious small art from the Middle Ages from Mecklenburg and northern Germany in the vaults in the basement. In the ducal rooms on the upper floors, the splendor of the former princely residence is brought back to life with paintings and handicraft objects from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, magnificent art chamber pieces and valuable hunting and ceremonial weapons. Güstrow Castle is one of the most important Renaissance castles in northern Germany. When the medieval predecessor was largely destroyed by fire over 400 years ago, the impressive residence was created in its current form. It combines Italian and French architectural elements with a typically northern European basic structure in a fascinating way. Dobbertin is a very pretty brick half-timbered village, dominated by its large monastery on the shore of the lake. This monastery, once enormously wealthy (25,000 hectares of property! That means all the surrounding villages, forests, fields, ...! One of the largest and richest businesses in Mecklenburg until it was dissolved in 1918), is now a home and job opportunity for disabled people. Perhaps a little remote, but quiet and a world of its own.

In 1871, the well-known architect Martin Haller (who built the Hamburg town hall, among other things) built the manor house in the classical style for Johannes Hillmann. It was the center of a fairly large estate (513 hectares). After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was a hotel for a few years; it is now privately owned.
