Evening atmosphere at the island lake

Barlach's sculptures and paintings are exhibited in the bright exhibition building and in Barlach's studio house; the exhibition building currently has works on the theme of "movement": "Avenger", "Wanderer" and "Dancing Old Man". In the studio house there are impressive designs for World War I memorials, including the Hamburg and Magdeburg memorials, the two sculptures with which Barlach had his breakthrough, the figures of the Beethoven memorial and pictures of him. Ernst Barlach: Born in 1870, raised in the Hamburg area and in Mecklenburg, Barlach studied art and did this and that; was unsuccessful for a long time until he traveled to Russia at the age of 36 and brought inspiration and ideas from there/from the folk art there. Since then, Barlach has created down-to-earth, authentic, earth-rooted, often clunky figures and was successful with them. At 40 he went to Güstrow, at 56 he had his studio house built, and died at the age of 68. Highly recommended, Güstrow and its two Barlach museums.

Schöninsel is no longer accessible because the bridge to the island is dilapidated and closed

The lake in the south of Güstrow is around 480 hectares in size and between 6 and 15 meters deep. Güstrower Südstadt borders the lake to the north and Heidberg to the east. The lake got its name from the small Schöninsel, which is connected to the surrounding area by a bridge. There are various hiking, cycling and horseback riding trails along the shore, and bathing spots invite you to swim in summer.
