Beautiful area

The Wittenborner Heide nature reserve remained nutrient-poor and unfertilized due to its previous use as a military training area. This resulted in a diverse landscape of heathland, moors and sparse forests that provide a habitat for many species. You can hike through a very beautiful landscape that is always worth a visit.

The Segeberg Forest, formerly known as the Segeberg Heath, is the second largest forest area in Schleswig-Holstein after the Sachsenwald Forest. Numerous hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails crisscross the approximately 40 square meters. While spruce, larch, oak, and beech trees dominate much of the Segeberg Forest, the landscape changes in the south around the town of Bark and becomes a heathland. Tucked away in the middle of the forest is the small Krattkoppelsee lake. The "Wittenborner Heide" in the district of Segeberg with 294 hectares will be protected in the future. Environment Minister Robert Habeck signed a corresponding ordinance, as the ministry announced on April 21, 2016. The area includes large parts of the former "Wittenborn" training area, including part of the bird sanctuary "Barker and Wittenborner Heide" and is therefore part of the European NATURA 2000 protected area system . It is the oldest and largest stone bridge in Schleswig-Holstein. The stone bridge over the Schmalfelder Au was built in 1785 because a wooden bridge that had been stretched over the small river at this exact point 82 years previously was too prone to repair. It would have had to be rebuilt every 20 years to keep up with the increasing traffic.
