The Wittenborner Heide nature reserve remained nutrient-poor and unfertilized due to its previous use as a military training area. This resulted in a diverse landscape of heathland, moors and sparse forests that provide a habitat for many species. You can hike through a very beautiful landscape that is always worth a visit.

Just a few hundred years ago, raised bogs were widespread in the north-west German lowlands and covered around 3% of the country's area. Today, raised bogs in Schleswig-Holstein have disappeared except for a few remnants as a result of drainage, conversion to agricultural land and peat extraction. The Flaschenmoor is considered to be the most completely preserved raised bog in Schleswig-Holstein. With an area of 521 ha, it is also the largest raised bog in the Schleswig-Holstein young moraine. The moor was declared a nature reserve in 1981. Extensive measures to restore a natural state (“regeneration”) have been carried out since 1978. Most of the canned bog has been rewetted. Birches and moor grass have been pushed back over large areas. The preservation and, wherever possible, the regeneration of moors into functional ecosystems is an important goal of nature conservation throughout Central Europe. The binding of carbon dioxide has a clearly positive influence on the climate. Due to their storage capacity, the moors have a balancing effect on the water balance. The Flaschenmoor is part of the European ecological network "Natura 2000" (FFH area).
