Today's Bad Oldesloe - Henstedt-Ulzburg cycle path runs along the former narrow-gauge railway line of the Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloer-Eisenbahn AG (EBOE). The section between Bad Oldesloe and Barmstedt was opened in 1907 as an extension of the Elmshorn-Barmstedt railway line, which had already been built in 1896. In 1973, train service on the section to Barmstedt was discontinued for economic reasons and amid protests from the local population. Passenger service was replaced by buses.
