5월 3, 2025, Hansdorfer Brook Nature Reserve
Here it is far enough away from the city, beautiful and less frequented, so that you don't get in each other's way so quickly.

The NABU House in Duvenstedter Brook is also a highlight. There's an interesting exhibition and plenty of additional information about the Brook. When the weather's nice, you can take a short rest outside on the benches. The NABU House welcomes any small financial donation.

The Duvenstedter Brook is a great area for hikers, cyclists, and sometimes horseback riders—unfortunately, it's been closed to us as dog owners for about 30 years. It's hard to understand why "discrimination" is so prevalent...

At around 780 hectares, the Duvenstedter Brook is the second largest nature reserve (NSG) in the city. Together with the nature reserves Wohldorfer Wald, Klein-Hansdorfer Brook and the Hunaniederung, it forms a landscape unit and at the same time the largest nature reserve complex in the Hamburg area. In the Duvenstedter Brook you can get an impression of how the spooky-looking moor forests on the edge of the open areas have been trying to overgrow the moor for thousands of years. But just as often they fail because of the tree-hostile living conditions and the acidic environment of the open moor areas. In this natural "battle zone" between moor and forest, important animal species such as the crane and the dragonfly "Große Moosjungfer" live throughout Europe. The rut of the deer is a spectacle with the character of a folk festival every year in September. https://www.hamburg.de/duvenstedter-brook/

You have all of northern Germany's nature in one area, heathland, forest, fallow land, moorland, swamps, etc.

Today's Bad Oldesloe - Henstedt-Ulzburg cycle path runs along the former narrow-gauge railway line of the Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloer-Eisenbahn AG (EBOE). The section between Bad Oldesloe and Barmstedt was opened in 1907 as an extension of the Elmshorn-Barmstedt railway line, which had already been built in 1896. Today, you can cycle here in a relaxed manner, almost always in a straight line without any major climbs or descents. For over 66 years, both passenger and freight trains ran on the nearly 53 km long, standard-gauge line. Until 1945, the line also played an important role as a connection between the Elbe Marshes and Mecklenburg. During both World Wars, refugee and troop transports also took place here. As early as the 1930s, passenger traffic on the line was largely converted to the then-modern diesel railcars. In the postwar period, however, the line was only of regional importance, primarily for commuter and school transport, as well as for the transport of agricultural products. In 1973, train service on the section to Barmstedt was discontinued for economic reasons and amid protests from the local population. Passenger service was replaced by buses. In the following years, the tracks were dismantled and a cycle path was created. Some of the old railway buildings along the line are now used as residential buildings. https://www.kreis-stormarn.de/freizeit-und-tourismus/bahnradwege/route-a-die-ehemalige-bahntrasse-der-eboe.html

a wonderful NSG, which always has new impressions to offer, well developed by many paths that may not all be passed during the rutting season

It is great for cycling here and there are plenty of councils. We hiked and cycled the entire route between Henstedt-Ulzburg and Bad Oldesloe. The route is a real eye-catcher in the warmer months. What is green and blooming there sometimes borders on overstimulation. When the apples, cherries, etc. are ripe, you can even eat your fill or take something to take home.
