The castle in Friedewald (main building) was built around 1580 by Count Heinrich IV zu Sayn. The façade facing the courtyard is in the late Renaissance style. The building had already fallen into disrepair at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, but was restored and completely renovated between 1885 and 1895. Shortly before the First World War, additional outbuildings were built by Prince Otto von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, who acquired the palace in 1912. The castle moat could be filled with a specially designed water pipe. In 1933 large parts of the interior were auctioned off. Between the world wars and during the Second World War, the castle was used in different ways. Since 1949, the castle has served as a conference venue for the Friedewald social academy. In 1955 the castle was taken over by the "Haus Friedewald e.V." acquired. Further conversions and extensions were carried out while preserving the original building structure.
