In 1663, Johann Moritz, as sovereign, began negotiations with the representatives of the city of Siegen for a princely burial site. The choice fell on the grounds of the Nassau Court (today the Lower Castle). The architect of the princely crypt was the Dutchman Maurits Post (1645-1677). This burial site was completed in 1670. One enters the mausoleum through a double-leaf door made of cast iron with lavish vanitas symbolism, the crowned coat of arms of the House of Nassau-Siegen, the Order of the Elephant and the FINIS banner.
