They are located about 210 m above sea level and offer a wonderful view when the weather is clear. The formerly imposing castle complex was first mentioned in documents in 1174 as "Castrum novum in windeke" and served as a border fortress for the Counts of Berg against the Counts of Sayn. A copy of this imperial document and finds from Windeck Castle can be viewed in the Altwindeck Museum Village. Windeck Castle was first destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and finally in 1860 by the French. After that, it was not rebuilt until the restoration of the castle ruins began in 1960.
