They are located about 210 m above sea level and offer a wonderful view when the weather is clear. The formerly imposing castle complex was first mentioned in documents in 1174 as "Castrum novum in windeke" and served as a border fortress for the Counts of Berg against the Counts of Sayn. A copy of this imperial document and finds from Windeck Castle can be viewed in the Altwindeck Museum Village.
