The old town of Hachenburg with its beautifully restored half-timbered houses on the Old Market Square was built around 1400.
The market fountain was built in 1626. The gilded lion is the Sayn coat of arms.
The Catholic Church of the Assumption of Mary on the Old Market Square in Hachenburg is a former Franciscan church that was built in 1637 by the Bishop of Osnabrück as a fief of the Electorate of Cologne.
The castle bridge was built in 1664 to St. Catherine's Church so that the castle residents could attend services in St. Catherine's Church after the St. Nicholas Chapel, which was built in 1452/54 by Count Gerhard II as a castle chapel, had burned down.

Originally the trading centre of regional agriculture and livestock farming, it now forms the flourishing historic town centre. After 700 years of development, grain stalls and livestock traders were exchanged for tranquil cafés and inviting localities that give the old market the charm of an idyllic residential town.

Medieval charm

Surrounded by colourful half-timbering, basalt and slate, the listed town centre is adorned by the historic castle church and the baroque Franciscan church. As the town's landmark, the two-tailed, golden lion guards life on the old market. Resulting in a princely splendour of the market, which is characteristic of the title of the cultural metropolis of the Westerwald.

But amidst the impressive architecture, there are little secrets hidden around the old market. The free-swinging clock is unique in the world and is hidden behind one of the numerous windows, a dreamy reading garden slumbers between winding alleys and the city center surprises with its diverse history in the form of aesthetic monuments..."
