The pretty little reservoir owes its existence to uranium mining, because the Silberbach stream was dammed here to provide water for the uranium mines.

History Plans for a dam in the Zwickauer Mulde valley in the area of the current dam wall had been in place since 1890, and these plans became more concrete in 1908. For this reason, plans for an extension of the Neidhardtsthal paper factory were abandoned in 1905. In September 1915, the Royal District Administration of Schwarzenberg announced in the Schönheider Wochenblatt that preparatory work was being carried out for the dams on the Zwickauer Mulde near Eibenstock and on the Kleine Bockau near Sosa. The work would affect the areas of Neidhardtsthal, Muldenhammer, Hundshübel, Eibenstock, Schönheide, Schönheiderhammer, Unterstützengrün, Sosa, Blauenthal and Wildenthal. In 1919, however, the Saxon government announced that the dam project was being abandoned. It was only the growing population numbers in Zwickau and Chemnitz in the 1960s that gave rise to the old planning considerations again.

Reuse of brick ponds For example, numerous large and even smaller brick ponds have been created in the southern Vienna Basin, where the now globally active Wienerberger AG had its first large mining areas. On the Wienerberg in the south of Vienna, on the site of what was once Austria's largest brickworks, a large recreation area has been created, with a large brick pond with shallow banks in the middle. Another large brick pond is located in the Brunn am Gebirge recreation area, northwest of the Shopping City Süd. Some of the brick ponds are used for fishing and swimming. However, many ponds have been filled in over the past few decades to create building land. It is rare to be able to permanently protect individual ponds where flora and fauna worthy of protection have developed over the decades, such as the Flemmingsche Tonkuhle in Altwarmbüchen and the figure near Mödling, where half of the pond was filled in.

A brick pond is an artificial lake or larger pond that has been created by excavating material (mainly loam and clay) from a brickworks. This takes place in a clay pit or a so-called clay pit. If the quality of the groundwater is good, brick ponds, like quarry ponds, are often used as bathing lakes. In northern Germany, such bodies of water are often called clay pits or clay pits. Although the slopes are usually very steep, there is little risk of landslides - in contrast to many other quarry ponds. The clay-containing material is very strong due to the cohesion of the clay particles. Brick ponds are a subcategory of opencast mining pits.

This slate hole in Lößnitz served as an open-cast mine from the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century in which slate was broken and split. After it was closed, this opencast mine was converted into a “natural theater” for a few years. Today the slate hole in OT Dreihansen is filled with water and nature has made it a beautiful feature of Lößnitz in the Ore Mountains. The dam was built between 1948 and 1951. After the founding of the GDR, the dam was called the “Dam of Peace”. It was the first so-called "central youth facility" of the newly founded state on October 7, 1949. Source: http://www.sosa-online.de/geschichte.html

...then the system received an automatic control system for the raw water. In 2001, after reunification, the newly founded dam administration installed a new ventilation system that can supply pure oxygen. The final water treatment takes place at the Sosa waterworks. The reservoir has a volume of 5.94 million m³ and can hold up to 6.33 million m³ up to the overflow at the dam wall.

The slate hole is one of the most attractive sights in the town of Lößnitz (OT Dreihansen). This slate pit in Lößnitz (Saxony) served as an open-pit mine from the 19th to the early 20th century, in which slate was broken and split. After the shutdown, this opencast mine was converted into a "natural theater" for a few years.
