11월 17, 2024, Nienhagen Cliffs and Ghost Forest
Where the forest falls into the sea The impressive cliffs with their many idyllic corners and a breathtaking view of the sky and the wide sea are among the scenic highlights of the Baltic Sea resort of Nienhagen. With its spectacular, steep coastal path, this area is the ideal destination in the early morning when the sun rises over the sea. But a walk or jog in the evening sunset is of course just as romantic. The cliffs in Nienhagen are experiencing an unstoppable, constant decline due to nature. The reason for this is the phenomenon of steep slopes with high slope stability. This type of cliffs otherwise only includes cliff sections on the Bay of Lübeck, on the island of Poel, Fischland and the Wittow peninsula on Rügen: a special natural phenomenon!

This is the way to the pier, please push the bike for a few hundred meters. The Warnemünde piers have become a real mecca for vacationers and spontaneous walkers: On the west pier you can stroll about 550 meters out to sea. Or take a seat in the sand and use the pier wall as a backrest: When the wind blows from the east, there is a cozy, sheltered spot here at the foot of the west pier.

The Teepott is one of the landmarks of Warnemünde and, being located at the eastern end of the beach promenade, only a few meters away from the western pier and the Alter Strom. The popular building houses restaurants, souvenir shops and around 8000 exhibits collected from Reinhold Kasten - one of the last great adventurers and circumnavigators of the 20th century.

Such an excursion directly to the slope is very exciting. Please take care of the ghost forest and push your bike. Pedestrians have their own path directly on the cliff. Signs warn of dangers such as breaking off and falling.

From Nienhagen behind the ghost forest it is much quieter on the beach, but also more rocky.

The "Ghost Forest" was declared a nature reserve in 1943. With a width of about 100 meters and a length of about 1,300 meters, it is part of the Nienhäger Holz forest area. Locals say the forest is "where the wind mows the grass," as the grasses bent by the sea breeze appear to be all the same length. The oaks, beeches, hornbeams and ash trees are 90 to 170 years old and are relatively far apart. Little or no shrubbery grows between them - plenty of room for light and shade. For decades, the salty, damp Baltic Sea wind and the many storms have shaped the appearance of the forest. The crowns and trunks that seem to flee from the wind are also called "wind fleeing". The bizarre shapes of the trees create a mystical atmosphere, especially at dusk, when it is foggy and when it is windy.
