Today's Bad Oldesloe - Henstedt-Ulzburg cycle path runs along the former narrow-gauge railway line of the Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloer-Eisenbahn AG (EBOE). The section between Bad Oldesloe and Barmstedt was opened in 1907 as an extension of the Elmshorn-Barmstedt railway line, which had already been built in 1896. Today, you can cycle here in a relaxed manner, almost always in a straight line without any major climbs or descents. For over 66 years, both passenger and freight trains ran on the nearly 53 km long, standard-gauge line. Until 1945, the line also played an important role as a connection between the Elbe Marshes and Mecklenburg. During both World Wars, refugee and troop transports also took place here. As early as the 1930s, passenger traffic on the line was largely converted to the then-modern diesel railcars. In the postwar period, however, the line was only of regional importance, primarily for commuter and school transport, as well as for the transport of agricultural products. In 1973, train service on the section to Barmstedt was discontinued for economic reasons and amid protests from the local population. Passenger service was replaced by buses. In the following years, the tracks were dismantled and a cycle path was created.
