One might ask how dunes are formed so far inland... The answer would be: during the last ice age, during centuries of thawing, these fine sands were transported into the lagoon by meltwater rivers and then piled up by the wind.

Inland dunes Size: 1460 ha Nature reserve since 1990 The nature reserve is registered as an FFH (flora, fauna, habitat) area and is part of the European bird sanctuary "Riether Werder, Gottesheide, Ahlbecker Seegrund". After the ice melted at the end of the Weichselian glaciation around 10,000 years ago, an inland dune massif was formed in the area of the former Haff reservoir immediately south of Altwarp, which is made up of irregularly arranged dune ridges. Inland dunes of this kind can only be found again in southwest Mecklenburg, particularly in the town of Klein-Schmölen near Dömitz.

The Altwarper Binnendünen, Neuwarper See and Riether Werder nature reserve is characterized by the last ice age and the centuries-long thawing period that followed. From the dunes you have beautiful views all the way to Nowe Warpno on the Polish side. Numerous juniper trees and bushes grow here. A pristine valley with a special flair.
