The Ryck (pronounced [ʀɪk]) is a 30.7 kilometer long river that flows into the Dänische Wiek 5 km east of Greifswald as the southern part of the Greifswalder Bodden (Baltic Sea). Originally, in the northwest of Greifswald (i.e. on the other side of the Stralsund Bridge) in front of the city wall, there was the Boltenhäger Teich, also known as the Ryckteich, which was first mentioned in a document in 1288 and through which the Ryck flowed. The pond was a relatively shallow body of water that eventually dried up completely in the 19th century. At that time there was also the Baberow, a northern tributary of the Ryck. The name is derived from the Polish word Rjeka or Rěka for “river”. The names “Reke” and “Hilda” (like the original name of the former Eldena monastery) are also mentioned in documents from the 13th century. “Hilda” is the oldest recorded name of the river; a document from 1241 refers to the “Hildam fluvium”. Although the oldest documented mention of the monastery as “Hilda” is from 1199 and is therefore older, it can still be assumed that the monastery was named after the river and not the other way around.
