1월 1, 2026, Reichenstein Castle Ruins
A very interesting castle ruin. Its construction began between 1310 and 1320. In 1332, Ludwig III took up residence in the castle and from then on called himself Walpode von der Neuerburg, Lord of Reichenstein. In 1523, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Wied, who had it destroyed in 1618 after it had already fallen into considerable disrepair. Today, the Reichenstein castle ruins are privately owned and therefore not normally open to the public. Those wishing to visit the castle can book a guided tour through the local support association (by telephone). Additionally, the castle ruins are opened to the public on certain dates (during the summer). These dates are announced online by the support association.

More on the castle's interesting history: https://www.kuladig.de/Objektansicht/O-98105-20140804-3 It's nice that the complex perched on the spur has been preserved and that stylistically successful additions are possible today. Otherwise, they are nothing but lifeless, hollow, expensive, and often littered remnants of facades/structures/quarries. In the Middle Ages, these were also only partially livable as security-related functional buildings. This means they have a future again.

Whether you're a hiker, cyclist, or whatever, it's a must in fine to hot weather. Simple, pure sensory pleasure. Where else can you find this? The Döttesfeld village community's superbly maintained facility. So please appreciate it. And Kneipp would pat his belly with joy. Simple and ingenious.

The tunnel addresses the history of mining. The last time I visited the tunnel, there were lots of small bats living there. The history is also explained in detail on site.

When crossing the Wied, you pass a suspension bridge on foot. The route in this section of the Wied is largely free of car traffic. How long you will be able to enjoy the view of this motorway bridge is also questionable. (2024)
