It was built between 1497 and 1502 in the Principality of Catalonia by the Catalan King Ferdinand II of Aragon. The fortress guarded the Catalan side of the border with France. France conquered this fortress in 1642. After the Treaty of the Pyrenees, the fortress became part of France.

10월 1, 2022, Fortress of Salses-le-Château
The fortress of Salses was built by the Spaniards in just 7 years at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries to secure what was then the northern border of their country and to control the trade route from Barcelona to France. Built according to the latest military technology at the time, this bulwark withstood the demolition attempts of the famous fortress builder Vauban, who in the 17th century, after Rousillion had been ceded to France by the Peace of the Pyrenees, was commissioned by Louis XIV to raze this fortress to the ground.
