The town of Sotto il Monte has added "Giovanni XXIII" to its name in honor of its most prominent citizen: Angelo Giuseppe Roncali, who was born here in 1881. His birth name may be unfamiliar to many, but he became a priest, a cardinal, and then, as Pope Giovanni XXIII, Bishop of Rome and thus head of the Catholic Church. Considered by some to be merely a transitional pope due to his age, he surprised everyone at the very beginning of his pontificate by announcing the convocation of the Second Vatican Council. He is still highly esteemed not only here in his birthplace but throughout Italy. His feast day is October 11.

Spectacular 10th century Abbey, absolutely worth a mountain bike break, also worth visiting the cloister.

This sanctuary in honor of the Mother of God contains two remarkable depictions: Firstly, the mural (fresco) that shows Mary and her son in a comparatively simple manner, and secondly, a richly decorated statue of the Madonna. Here, too, she is holding the baby Jesus in her arms, but the manner of depiction is completely different: both she and Jesus are wearing a crown, while Mary is holding a scepter in her other hand. Thus, she is shown here as the "Queen of Heaven." This is in keeping with the heavenly hosts painted to the right and left of the niche, who are paying homage to the mother and child.

The Abbey of Sant'Egidio is of romantic architecture and is still perfectly intact, immersed in the woods of Mount Canto. It has an imposing bell tower and outside there is a sarcophagus where, according to some, the body of Queen Theoperga was placed. Next to the abbey there is the Ecumenical Studies Center named after John XXIII.

The Abbey of Sant'Egidio in Fontanella is a fascinating place full of history. The church suddenly appears at the end of a winding road up the eastern slope of Mount Canto. Its architecture is simple, with a sobriety typical of poor foundations in the province. It can also be visited inside.
