The castle's special jewel can be admired in its ballroom. This is where people danced, dined and discussed politics. A lively red deer frieze from the time it was built has been preserved on the walls and the magnificent stucco ceiling is richly decorated with hunting scenes. The castle museum houses an extensive collection of important paintings, impressive sculptures and precious small art from the Middle Ages from Mecklenburg and northern Germany in the vaults in the basement. In the ducal rooms on the upper floors, the splendor of the former princely residence is brought back to life with paintings and handicraft objects from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, magnificent art chamber pieces and valuable hunting and ceremonial weapons. Güstrow Castle is one of the most important Renaissance castles in northern Germany. When the medieval predecessor was largely destroyed by fire over 400 years ago, the impressive residence was created in its current form. It combines Italian and French architectural elements with a typically northern European basic structure in a fascinating way. Barlach's sculptures and paintings are exhibited in the bright exhibition building and in Barlach's studio house; the exhibition building currently has works on the theme of "movement": "Avenger", "Wanderer" and "Dancing Old Man". In the studio house there are impressive designs for World War I memorials, including the Hamburg and Magdeburg memorials, the two sculptures with which Barlach had his breakthrough, the figures of the Beethoven memorial and pictures of him. Ernst Barlach: Born in 1870, raised in the Hamburg area and in Mecklenburg, Barlach studied art and did this and that; was unsuccessful for a long time until he traveled to Russia at the age of 36 and brought inspiration and ideas from there/from the folk art there. Since then, Barlach has created down-to-earth, authentic, earth-rooted, often clunky figures and was successful with them. At 40 he went to Güstrow, at 56 he had his studio house built, and died at the age of 68. Highly recommended, Güstrow and its two Barlach museums.

St. Nikolai was first mentioned in 1257, but is certainly a little older. It was the heart of the second of the four Rostock settlements. The church was consecrated in its current form in 1312. It was badly damaged in the Second World War. In a long-term reconstruction, a changed usage concept was implemented: The church space is used for church services and events, there are apartments in the roof, and the tower was made usable for church administration tasks.

The city harbor, for many Rostock residents and visitors the actual center of the Hanseatic city, can look back on a long history. The wide waterfront promenade with sailing harbor and museum harbor, which is lined with numerous restaurants, clubs, shops and theater venues, invites you to stroll and linger all year round. The city harbor was built almost 800 years ago, almost at the same time as the Hanseatic city itself. The first harbor basin was built in the area of the historic warehouses. With the expansion of Rostock in a westerly direction, with the emergence of the districts in Mittelstadt and Neustadt, the Rostock harbor developed further and further from around the middle of the 13th century to the point of becoming a fishing bastion. After 1989, the residents of the Hanseatic city rediscovered the city harbor. From 1991 the old port facilities were removed. Today, with the coal port, the Haedge peninsula, various fish halls and storage buildings, you can mainly see the port development of the 19th and early 20th centuries in Rostock's city harbor. The former medieval harbor buildings have largely been built over or removed. Numerous companies are now based around the old storage facilities. Among them is the shipping company AIDA Cruises, which has now developed into one of the largest employers in the Hanseatic city. https://www.meck-pomm-lese.de/gehenswuerdigkeiten/oertlichkeiten/der-rostocker-stadthafen/
