The construction of the grotto at the end of the 19th century dates back to a promise made by Julius Schulz, a teacher at the Hohenfels elementary school. He had taken his class on a trip to the Dauner Maar. The children persuaded him to take a boat trip on the Weinfelder Maar. However, the boat was leaking and threatened to sink. The teacher then vowed to build a Marian grotto if everyone could be rescued. With combined strength, everyone managed to reach the shore safely. Soon after, local residents began construction on this site. A Madonna of Lourdes and a statue of Bernadette were erected. Since then, the Hohenfels-Essingen Beautification Association, founded in 1895, has taken on the task of maintaining and preserving this complex. Source: Information board on site.

Just above the Mariengrotte (Grotto) is a small sheltered pavilion. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Volcanic Eifel landscape.

Chapel on the Mühlenberg The mountain chapel was built in 1949/50 at the suggestion of Father Calsing on the border of the three parish villages of Dockweiler, Dreis, and Betteldorf. It was intended as a collective expression of gratitude for the fact that the parish had been spared extensive war damage. Many citizens contributed to the chapel's construction. The municipalities of Dockweiler and Dreis supplied the wood, and many other citizens contributed to the chapel's construction. On July 2, 1950, the chapel was consecrated by Father Calsing in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows. From the chapel, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Dockweiler, extending to Dreis and Brück.
