The "Lanzer See" campsite is located north of Lauenburg near Basedow and, in addition to Lake Lanzer See, also has access to the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. The "basic pitches" have views of the water 💦 and passing boats 🚤, offering direct access for walks or simply enjoying the evening sunset. 🌅 The restrooms are extremely clean and the staff is very friendly. The campsite is a manageable size, but the central part is populated by too many permanent campers who—if you're lucky—are not there. ☺️

The "Stecknitz-Delvenau-Niederung" nature reserve, covering 617 hectares, was designated in 2002 by the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Nature and the Environment. It runs predominantly along the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, along the "Green Belt," the former death strip of the inner-German border between the state border and the "Kolonnenweg" (Kolonnenweg). The "Green Belt" is part of the "Stecknitz-Delvenau" nature reserve of the same name on the Mecklenburg side, which has been protected since 1990 with an area of 249 hectares. Further information is available in the flyer from the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Nature and the Environment or from the Hamburg Botanical Society. https://www.bund-sh.de/naturschutz/schutzgebiete-des-bund/stecknitz-delvenau-niederung/

The village of Basedow lies northeast of Lauenburg, sheltered on the slope of the high bank of the Elbe River, which bends northward, and thus in the glacial valley of the Delvenau River. It is documented as an existing village in the famous tithe register of the Bishop of Ratzeburg from 1230. The name indicates a Wendish settlement called "Basedowe," which translates as "book nest." Basedow belongs to the group of ancient settlements in the southern Sadelbande, where German settlement is assumed to have occurred around 1150 AD. However, finds from the Late Stone and Bronze Ages prove that the Basedow fields were settled much earlier. Due to its location on the Stecknitz Canal, which was opened in 1398 and can be described in modern parlance as the "wet salt road," and along which countless loads of salt were transported from Lüneburg to Lübeck over the centuries, Basedow has always had a certain connection to Hanseatic trade. https://www.basedow-sh.de/unser-dorf/historisches/

The St. Jakobi Chapel was built in 1868 according to plans by the state architect Carl August Wilhelm Lohmeyer. The simple half-timbered building was supplemented in 1915 by the slightly raised choir and the tower. Further renovations took place in 1978, namely the reconstruction of the dilapidated tower and the renovation of the outer facade in 2013. The old altarpiece, which probably dates back to 1868, now has its place above the entrance door. It shows an image of Christ as the Lamb of God and bears the inscription "God is love". https://www.kirche-ll.de/gemeinden/lauenburg/luetau/geschichte.html

The railway canal bridge at Lake Lanzer is a fascinating structure that spans the Elbe-Lübeck Canal between Lauenburg and Büchen.
