You can get to the Steinsburg from Suhl-Neundorf. The Hohlweg hiking trail leads from the church in Neundorf to the Suhler Steinsburg. However, you will look in vain for a castle. The name 'Steinsburg' refers to a hilltop made of hard basalt rock that was pushed to the surface of the earth by a hot volcano many millions of years ago. Since basalt is very hard and durable, the stones were mined and used to build houses and roads. A round quarry basin and a small basalt surface can still be seen today.
