    Speyer Gate (1772/73) - Frankenthal 🚴‍♂️

After the demolition of the old city wall gate, this new, triumphal arch-like gate was built between 1772 and 1773. The extensions to the right and left of the gate no longer exist. The stone lions sitting on the gate were reinstalled in 1975. The Speyer Gate is the last remaining gate of its type in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is considered a direct model for the Karlstor gate in Heidelberg and was probably designed by the same architect. The Speyer Gate is now considered a landmark of the city and also served as the model for Frankenthal's official logo. 🚴‍♂️

"The southern counterpart to the Wormser Tor, the Speyerer Tor, was built in 1772/73 according to plans by the Palatinate chief building director Nicolas de Pigage. It was built immediately before the Karlstor in Heidelberg, which goes back to the same architect and is based in many respects on the Frankenthal predecessor The two pairs of columns on the south side still show the damage from the wars of the French Revolution."
