    Protestant St. Mark's Church (1896/98) - Oggersheim 🚴‍♂️

The Protestant St. Mark's Church in the Oggersheim district was built between 1896 and 1898. During World War II, the church was one of the few in Ludwigshafen to survive major damage. The leaded glass windows were damaged, as they had been in 1921 during the explosion of the Oppau nitrogen works and again in 1948 during the tank car explosion at BASF. The church's 50th anniversary was also celebrated in 1948. In the anniversary year, it was renamed St. Mark's Church. The exterior of the three-aisled gallery hall is made of embossed red sandstone, interspersed with yellow sandstone. The 53-meter-high church tower is flanked by stair turrets. The central nave has a cross vault, and the choir is flat. Above the main portal, in a niche, is a statue of Christ, modeled after the sculpture created by Bertel Thorvaldsen for the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen. 🚴‍♂️
