For centuries, the only road connecting the towns of Bargen and Merishausen ran through Baden territory. In peacetime, this was never a problem; it only arose during World War I. In 1967, a treaty was concluded between Switzerland and Germany, which provided for 8 territorial cessions each from the Swiss and German sides, with the aim of making the border more advantageous for both sides.
