    About 12 meters high rises here on the roadside the famous Blue Stone. Depending on the incidence of light, the surface of the rock appears bluish. In the past, farmers from the area discovered faces in the rocky outcrops - and with a little imagination, that is still possible today.

    The rock formation is of volcanic origin and dates back to the time of Hegau volcanism. At that time liquid magma flowed into a hollow and froze to stone. Over time, the soft earth around the stone was removed. Today, the impressive rock clearly stands out from the surrounding landscape.

      The Blue Stone is a rock formation near the village of Randen at about 836 meters above sea level. The rock is today a protected natural monument and together with its surroundings a popular recreational area for the city of Blumberg. The name comes from the color anthracite, which is strongly reminiscent of blue. However, weathering causes the outermost layer of the blue stone to turn grayish-brownish (see picture below).
