Emerald Spring is a hot spring located in the Norris Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park and is viewable from the wooden boardwalk. Originally named Emerald Geyser by park superintendent Philetus Norris in the late 19th century, its name was officially changed to Emerald Spring by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1930. The spring is 27 feet deep, with a water temperature of about 181.9°F. Its unique emerald green color is due to sunlight filtering through the water, creating a blue hue that reflects off the yellow sulfur lining the pool. Although typically calm, with only a few bubbles at the surface, Emerald Spring occasionally experiences periods of activity, including small eruptions and, in 1931, significant eruptions reaching heights of 60 to 75 feet. In 1892, optical physicist Robert W. Wood famously pranked onlookers by adding fluorescein to the pool, causing it to glow with an unusual color.
