Back Basin is located in Yellowstone National Park's Norris Geyser Basin, a geothermal hotspot. Unlike the more barren Porcelain Basin, Back Basin is forested with young lodgepole pines growing among fire-scarred remnants from a wildfire that took place in1988. Back Basin has scattered hydrothermal features, including steamy hot springs with milky blue waters. The area is known for its diverse thermophiles — microscopic heat-loving organisms that thrive in extreme conditions. Norris Basin, where Back Basin is situated, is one of the hottest and most acidic geothermal areas in Yellowstone, so always follow safety guidelines and stay on trails and boardwalks to avoid burns and injuries.
