The Schöntal Monastery is situated in an extremely idyllic location in the Jagst Valley in Hohenlohe. The Cistercian monastery inspires with the imposing double tower facade of the baroque church. The tomb of the knight Götz von Berlichingen can be found in the cloister. The monastery went through a fateful ups and downs: shortly after the monastery was founded in the 12th century, the order moved from Neusaß above the Jagst down into the valley. In the course of the Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648) Schöntal was occupied by the Swedes, and the monks had to flee.

In the 18th century, the monastery flourished during the tenure of Abbot Benedikt Knittel (1683 to 1732). In 1802 the owner changed in the course of secularization: the monastery was assigned to the Duchy of Württemberg. At the beginning of the 19th century, Schöntal Monastery had 6,000 acres of forest and vineyards and around 3,000 subjects were in the service of the monastery. The Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese has been running an educational center in the convent since 1975.

In the monastery shop to the right of the church, there are ice creams at fair prices and next door shady benches overlooking the monastery. For those who prefer a bit more comfortable, head to a courtyard in the Kloster Cafe.
