The path over the Brenner Pass is one of the most important old roads in Central Europe. The route of the Via Raetia of the Roman era chose for the first stage the steep ascent over Unterberg (Stephansbrücke) to Schoenberg on the left, on the lower reaches of the valley. This was followed by all other ways, to Brenner Road.
