In the early 19th century, a farmer from Niederaußem came across lignite during field work. He opened small pits for mining. Other landowners followed his initiative. Industrial lignite was not developed until the end of the century. In the vicinity of the village of Oberaußem, a briquette factory was built, and from 1910 the Fortuna power plant for powering the city of Cologne. The numerous workers found a home in the Fortuna colony.
