The water that lies before you here is a remnant of the old sea channel the 'Gouwe'. Long ago this water separated Schouwen from Duiveland. After the flood disaster of 1953 the water was closed off from the Grevelingen with a new dike. Remnants of the old agricultural harbours and the channel can still be found in the landscape.
Wonderful to dream away to a period of prosperity at this place. In your mind you can still see boats passing by here. Wonderful this historical geographical point.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What types of trails can I expect at Dijkwater (Grevelingen) and what is their difficulty?

Dijkwater primarily features walking routes along dikes and through natural areas. The main designated route is a 4.3-kilometer walk, generally considered easy and suitable for most visitors. While the terrain can be exposed to the elements, the paths are not technically challenging. There are also opportunities for cycling on surrounding dikes.

Are there specific viewpoints or landmarks to look out for at Dijkwater (Grevelingen)?

Yes, Dijkwater offers several excellent viewpoints, particularly along the dikes. Keep an eye out for the strategically placed "gluurmuren" (peeping walls), which allow for discreet birdwatching without disturbing the wildlife. Remnants of old agricultural harbors and the historical "Gouwe" sea channel can also be observed, offering a glimpse into the area's past.

Is Dijkwater (Grevelingen) accessible by public transport?

While the immediate Dijkwater area is quite remote, the broader Grevelingen region is served by public transport. The Connexxion bus service 104 crosses the Brouwersdam, and bus service 133 (among others) crosses the Grevelingendam. From these points, local connections or a short taxi ride might be necessary to reach Dijkwater itself, which is located between Sirjansland and Dreischor on Schouwen-Duiveland.

Are dogs allowed on the trails at Dijkwater (Grevelingen)?

Generally, dogs are permitted on leashes on public paths and dikes in nature reserves like Dijkwater. However, to protect nesting birds and wildlife, access to certain sensitive areas, such as the Slikken van Dijkwater bird reserve, is restricted. Always look for local signage regarding dog access, especially during breeding seasons.

What unique natural features can be found at Dijkwater (Grevelingen)?

Dijkwater is renowned for its rich biodiversity. It features brackish pools, old dikes, and calcareous grasslands. Unique flora includes vast numbers of rare harlequin orchids, marsh orchids, bee orchids, and sea-green sedge, especially on the flower dikes in spring. The mudflats are home to glasswort, a rare plant thriving in dynamic saltwater conditions.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see at Dijkwater (Grevelingen)?

Dijkwater is a birdwatcher's paradise. You can spot a wide variety of bird species, including avocets, common terns, Arctic terns, and the rare little tern. During winter, large flocks of grey plovers are common. The calm, shallow waters also attract spoonbills, egrets, and occasionally even flamingos. The Brouwerssluis, part of the Grevelingen, is also home to a seal colony.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options directly at Dijkwater (Grevelingen)?

Dijkwater is a nature reserve and does not have direct facilities like cafes, pubs, or accommodation. Visitors typically find these amenities in the nearby villages of Sirjansland and Dreischor, or in larger towns on Schouwen-Duiveland. It's advisable to bring your own refreshments for your visit.

Is wild swimming permitted in Dijkwater (Grevelingen) or the Grevelingenmeer?

While the Grevelingenmeer is a large saltwater lake, Dijkwater itself is a nature reserve with shallow, brackish pools primarily for wildlife. Wild swimming is generally not encouraged within the immediate Dijkwater reserve due to its ecological importance. For swimming, it's best to seek designated recreational areas along the wider Grevelingenmeer, where water sports are popular.

What is the best time of year to visit Dijkwater (Grevelingen) for birdwatching or seeing the unique flora?

For birdwatching, the spring and autumn migration seasons offer exceptional opportunities to see a wide variety of species. To witness the unique flora, particularly the rare orchids, spring is the ideal time when the flower dikes burst with color. The area's dynamic nature means there's always something to observe throughout the year.

Are there any circular walking routes available at Dijkwater (Grevelingen)?

Yes, the designated 4.3-kilometer walking route through Dijkwater is a circular walk. This trail guides you through the heart of the nature reserve, showcasing its diverse landscapes and allowing you to return to your starting point without retracing your steps. It's an easy route, typically taking 1 to 1.5 hours to complete.

What should I wear when hiking at Dijkwater (Grevelingen)?

Given that Dijkwater features dikes and paths that can be exposed to the elements, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Layers of clothing are advisable to adapt to changing weather conditions, as the area can be windy. Depending on the season, consider bringing rain gear, sun protection, and binoculars for birdwatching.
