Muckross House is a beautifully preserved 19th-century house set against the stunning backdrop of Muckross lake and the surrounding mountains. The house, now a museum, offers a glimpse into Ireland’s aristocratic past with its period rooms and impressive gardens.

Muckross House (Teach Mhucrois in Irish) was a stately residence and castle-like mansion and is located south of the Irish town of Killarney. It has formed the centerpiece of Bourn Vincent Memorial Park since 1932. This in turn is part of the 10,000 hectare Killarney National Park.

      Since the mid-20th century

Muckross House grew into a museum. The rooms and their furnishings give a good impression of the life of nobles in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The large rooms have oversized room heights. Paintings, tapestries and hunting trophies adorn the walls.

As Killarney is the quintessential tourist center of western Ireland, other attractions have been built in and around Muckross House. In the main building there is a restaurant, a pottery workshop and a weaving workshop. Outside beautiful gardens have been laid out mainly with roses. In 2000 the Walled Garden Center was added.

The Muckross Traditional Farms had been established much earlier. These are intended to show the daily life of the Irish rural population in the 1930s and 1940s, historical farming equipment is on display with descriptions, and farmers are also employed who cultivate and work the land with these old equipment.

Muckross House and Walled Garden Center can be visited all year round. The house is only closed during the Christmas holidays. Muckross Traditional Farms is closed to visitors during the winter months and usually reopens in March each year.

A special attraction are the Coach Tours, which are offered starting from Muckross House. These are carriage rides out into the extensive grounds of the national park. The donor's wish for the garden to be the largest playground in the world may well have come true.
