Historical Park in Lund

Lundagård is an old 2.5-hectare park between the cathedral, historical museum and University Square in the heart of historic downtown Lund.

The park was created in its present form in the 18th century as a green oasis for the citizenry and the growing number of students in the at that time arid city center. Here Lundagård is on historically significant ground, because there was from the end of the 9th century, a royal estate, which contributed significantly to the fact that Lund developed into a power center in early medieval Scandinavia.

The oldest witnesses of the former concentration of power around the Lundagård are on the one hand the 1154 consecrated cathedral on the southern edge of the park and the Kungshuset in the northern part of the park. The Kungshuset was completed in 1584 as a royal residence, was for a short period also bishop's residence and from about 1690 to 1882 the first main building of 1666 founded university.

On the north side, the park merges seamlessly with the university square in front of the university's current main building. The square is dominated by a large historic fountain and forms the appropriate Entré for the prestigious and in 1882 inaugurated university building.

Moreover, every four years the park is the scene of the Lundakarnevalen, a carnival event organized by student associations with more than 150 years of tradition.
