      Lund Cathedral

Lund's Domkyrka, the cathedral in the center of the historic city center of the old episcopal city of Lund, is an impressive work of medieval architecture and at the same time the oldest cathedral in all of Scandinavia.

The cathedral was built from 1104 as a Romanesque basilica with a high central nave, two lower side aisles, two short transepts and a large, semicircular apse. In 1123 the completed crypt was first consecrated and in 1145 the almost completed Lunds Domkyrka was consecrated to St. Lawrence of Rome.

In 1234 the cathedral was severely damaged by fire, in which only the crypt was spared from the fire and has remained in its original condition to this day. Although most of the damage was repaired during a renovation in the early 16th century, it took until the 19th century for the cathedral to be fully restored.

One of the most famous attractions inside the cathedral is the large astronomical clock, right next to the main entrance. The clock is a technical masterpiece created around 1425, of which only three examples still exist in Europe. In addition to the time on a 24-hour dial, the clock, several meters high, shows the phases of the moon, the signs of the zodiac and a calendar with days of the week and date over a period of 200 years. Every day at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. (Sundays 1 and 3 p.m.) a small organ built into the clock plays the medieval hymn In dulci jubilo, while a small gate opens and a procession with three kings representing the medieval continents and Mary with the Baby Jesus passes by.

The crypt is considered one of the most famous surviving examples of medieval architecture in Northern Europe. Its ceiling construction consists of a total of 41 cross vaults, which are supported by a forest of pillars, but still exude a certain lightness.

The cathedral has a total of five different organs, with the main organ in the west gallery being the largest church organ in Sweden with 102 registers and 7,074 pipes. Both the Domkyrkoforum and the Domkyrkomuseum in the nearby Historical Museum offer more in-depth information on the history and development of the cathedral.
